Summerville, SC – The Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce recently became a member of the South Carolina Alliance to Fix our Roads (SCFOR).  The alliance is a non-partisan, non-profit, statewide organization made up of business leaders, associations and chambers of commerce who advocate for increasing infrastructure funding.  They believe a safe and efficient highway system is essential to continuing the state’s economic growth, thriving tourism industry, and most of all, the safety and well-being of its citizens.

SCFOR has traveled around the state and met with several Chambers of Commerce and civic clubs to discuss the condition and needs of South Carolina’s roads and bridges. Most recently, SCFOR spoke at the Summerville Chamber of Commerce Power Hour in April.

Executive Director, Bill Ross, stated they are very excited to join forces with the Summerville Chamber of Commerce, and look forward to expanding their membership to more business industry groups. Ross explained that new technology, manufacturing and tourism businesses coming into South Carolina has created even more demand for better roads.

“With the growth of businesses and tourism alike, it is important to create a safer, more efficient system," he said. "Otherwise, we will lose out to our sister states - Georgia and North Carolina. Which is why the support of the business community is essential as we continue to advocate for sufficient funding for our deteriorating highway system.”

In 2013, The Alliance joined forces with a coalition that included the S. C. Chamber of Commerce, Palmetto AgrBusiness, S. C Trucking Association, S. C. Forestry Association, S. C. Farm Bureau, S. C. Manufacturers Alliance and the AGC to advocate for increased highway and infrastructure funding. The group adopted a “Road Map to the Future“ campaign and was successful in obtaining passage of a major funding bill that included $500 million in bonding, $50 million for bridge improvements and $50 million plus for Non-federal highways.
